Remembering Br. Ceci Hojilla FSC, 8 February 1944 - 21 June 2009
By Br. Bobby Casingal FSC

June 20, Saturday, Br. Ceci was dressing up to attend a 1:30 p.m. wedding but he never left his room. He missed Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. Br. Gus checked with the cook on who among the Bros had not yet eaten his breakfast. Upon learning that Br.Ceci had skipped breakfast, Br. Gus knocked on Br. Ceci’s door. After getting no response, he entered the room where he saw Br.Ceci sprawled face down on the floor. Br. Gus called Br. Dennis and together they checked Br. Ceci. An ambulance was called to bring Br. Ceci to the hospital where he was pronounced as having expired long before he was brought there.

By 9:00 p.m. of Sunday night, the NSDC [National Shrine of the Divine Child] in LSGH [La Salle Green Hills] was already filled with the many students, former students, alumni and friends of Br. Ceci. His remains arrived at around 9:15 and a Mass was celebrated at around 9:30 p.m.

The next 4 days saw one of the biggest continuous gatherings of the Lasallian family. All barriers and differences among the various La Salle schools, sectors and age groups simply disappeared. Even the usual protocols, procedures and bureaucracy so common among big institutions were gone. Even the fear of the H1N1 virus could not stop so many kids from Zobel with their parents and former students bringing their sons and daughters to see Br. Ceci. They all came and gathered to pay their respect to a Brother who had touched their lives in so many various ways.

During these past few days, I saw and was inspired as I witnessed one of the finest examples of us being a family, the Lasallian family.

Many came not to cheer our basketball team and show that we are better than the other schools or because of intense school rivalry. No, they did not come because they were attracted due to the publicity of a show featuring alumni stars and celebrities. Neither were they organized and asked by administrators to attend a “media event” that usually accompanies a major La Salle project like the scholarship fund or the anniversary of one of our schools. The Lasallian family gathered because one man, a La Salle Brother touched and made a difference in their lives.

I was humbled as I saw that in one flawed and even inconsistent Brother how God in his goodness has reached out so that the young are valued, cared for, nurtured and can experience that they are loved. I can only pray that I too may be as faithful to our mission of caring for the young and showing them God’s goodness and his loving plan.

Goodbye, Ceci, I’ll see you again sans your outlandish colored shirts, your gadgets and electronic devices, your odds ways and death defying eating habits (that finally caught up with you) but always with the joy, the hope and laughter you bring and infect all of us. We are richer having known you. Maraming Salamat, Kapatid!
