Lasallian community storms Ondoy victims with relief goods

Update 1
compiled by Raphael Malenab, Carlos Sasis and Jay Calleja

In the wake of the death and destruction left by Typhoon Ondoy, Lasallians responded as a community to the needs of the calamity victims by mobilizing students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, friends and other members of the Lasallian family for relief operations that continue to this day. Here is a brief update on the efforts of some of the La Salle schools.

La Salle Green Hills
with a report from Ms. Eden Battad, CSD

(27 September 2009) A day after Typhoon Ondoy struck the greater part of the capital, relief operations immediately began at LSGH with calls for donations and volunteers permeating virtually every available communication line. Utilizing the LSGH Gymnasium as the base of operations, as many as 1400 volunteers consisting of high school students, faculty, staff and alumni donated, repacked and distributed relief goods to an estimated 60,000 families over the past week. Roughly 2 million pesos in cash donations were also received. At one point, the massive quantities of relief goods to be distributed to areas such as Cainta, Pasig, Rizal, Marikina, Fairview, Bulacan and Antipolo already lacked a means of transport. An overwhelming response from volunteers, mostly alumni, for trucks was received as they sent their personal vehicles and some container vans they use for business. As of this time, LSGH, now a major depository of relief materials, is still distributing relief goods in cooperation with different organizations such as the Ayala Foundation and Akbayan Party-list. Plans have already been submitted to Br. Felipe Belleza, Jr., LSGH president, to organize medical-dental missions and a rehabilitation program in disaster areas.

A part of this amount has been distributed to 12,500 families in the Muntinlupa, Marikina, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna areas. Relief operations are planned to reach San Pedro and Cabuyao, Laguna in the coming week. NSTP Voter's Ed gears up DLSU-D for automated elections

The National Service Training Program-Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS), in cooperation with Pre-Law Society, conducted a forum focusing on voter's education and the computerization of the 2010 National Elections dubbed "Hi-Tech na Boto, Uubra ba 'to?" on Sept. 18 at the Severino de las Alas Hall Auditorium.

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Spokesman and Education and Information Department Director James Jimenez discussed the ways and means around the controversial Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) system which will be used for the automated election system during the 2010 National Elections. Jimenez also showed the participants how to use the machine, what the ballot looks like, and how they would vote. The PCOS requires voters to indicate their choice by shading an oval beside the candidate's name. The ballots with the shaded ovals will then be fed into the counting machine, speeding up the release of election results.
