Baha-Talibayog farmers stopover at DLSU-Manila

Hannah M. Riñoza, DLSP Media Bureau Student Correspondent

Last 28 April 2008, Monday, De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU-M) accommodated for one night around 60 farmers from Barangays Baha and Talibayog in Calatagan, Batangas and some of their supporters. These farmers who journeyed 300 kilometers to Manila starting 21 April, are in danger of losing their 508-hectare agricultural land to Asturias Industries, a mining firm.

Upon their arrival from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office in Parañaque, a mass, presided by Batangas Archbishop Ramon Arguelles, was celebrated at the Pearl of Great Price Chapel. Members of the Lasallian community attended the mass to show support for the farmers.

From DLSU-M, the protest walk, Lakbay-Kalampag para sa Lupang Sakahan, Hindi Minahan!, will proceed to the offices of the DENR, Department of Agrarian Reform, and the Senate.
